This month’s Director’s blog shares Tips for Tech Success in Ford Library. When new students come to Fuqua, mastering basic technology tasks such as connecting to Fuqua networks, printing in the Library, and others can be a little overwhelming! We hope these tips will help.
Tech success starts with synchronizing Your Duke Net ID password.
Use your laptop or our stacks computer and browse to https://oit.duke.edu/selfservice, and login with your Duke Net ID (e.g. jdoe123) and password.
At the right of the Self Service home page, in the NET ID section, click on “+ Change your password”.
Enter your current password, and then create a new password that meets these guidelines in the appropriate boxes, and click “Submit”.
Why do I have to do this? – Your brand new Duke Net ID password allows you to login to computers on the Duke WIN network domain, but not computers on the FUQUA domain. Once you create and submit the new password, it will be “synced” across all Duke network domains in about 5 minutes, allowing you to login to any public computer at Fuqua.
This month’s Director’s blog features recent scholarship published by Fuqua faculty authors in online & print scholarly journals. Ford Library helps fund access for these journals for Duke and Fuqua. Fuqua authors’ names are in italics.

Beginning on Nov. 22nd, at the beginning of Fall/Thanksgiving break, the Fuqua buildings and the Library facility will only be accessible by Fuqua faculty and staff.
This change in access aligns with directions provided by Fuqua Dean Bill Boulding which state, in part, that Fuqua will not hold any in-person classes or activities at Fuqua after Fall Term 1 exams end on November 21st. Classes from November 30-December 18th will be entirely online.
Since the surveillance COVID testing which permits student access to Fuqua will not be conducted from 11/30 – 12/18, students will not be able to access the Fuqua buildings from November 22nd until baseline testing resumes around the first of the year.
In-person student access to Ford Library will resume in January once baseline testing has resumed, and upon approval by the Fuqua Administration.
Please note that Ford Library’s remote services and research support via chat or email will continue from 11/22 – 12/18, and in a limited way throughout the Winter Break.
If you’re having trouble getting access to Capital IQ or PitchBook (in particular) or to a Library-provided database in general; this blog post contains a proven fix for most issues.
Since Duke & Fuqua shifted to online classes, the heavier use of different online resource sites increases the chances that your authentication browser cookies become “corrupted” or invalid over time — particularly if you forget to logout from a site when you’re done.
Clearing Your Browser Cache and Cookies “For All Time”
In most browsers, pressing Shift+Ctrl+Del will bring up a dialog box to “Clear All History”. The title and appearance of the dialog may vary depending on your browser, but the options should be the same.
Make sure the time range is set to “Everything” or “For All Time” . At a minimum, tick the boxes for Active Logins, Cookies, and Cache. Then click “Clear Now”.
Now close (exit) your browser entirely. Don’t just close the tab. Shut down the browser and re-start it. Now you’re ready to return to the Library database site, and re-try your access.
What If That Doesn’t Help? Are you using VPN?
PitchBook and S&P Capital IQ both require an active VPN session as well as registered accounts on those sites. Fuqua users may have forgotten to select the Fuqua School of Business VPN option when connecting.
Try the following:
1) Disconnect from your current VPN session, and exit the software.
2) Clear your web browser’s cache and cookies completely (i.e. for all time), and then close/exit your browser completely (see above).
3) Re-start your VPN software and enter vpn.duke.edu in the 1st pop-up. box.
4) In the next dialog box, Fuqua users should choose Fuqua School of Business as your Group (see below):
Other Duke users not affiliated with Fuqua should pick the VPN option most appropriate to their affiliation.
Then click connect to connect to a VPN session.
5) Now re-start your browser, and re-try your connection to the desired database (PitchBook or Capital IQ).
Final (and crucial!) Pro Tip
Always use the connection link to a database from a Library web site — never from a bookmark, or a Google link.
Congratulations on finishing the final Term of the year! This post will fill our rising Second Years in on what Library resources, both print and online, will be available to you during summer break.
Using Library Databases During An Internship
The key point to consider when using library databases is to avoid the transfer of entire reports, articles, or data content from academically licensed databases to your summer employer. Transferring database content to a summer employer breaches our license with the vendor; and could cost the breaching user, and all of Fuqua, their access to the database.
Using databases to prepare for your internship without the transfer of content may be permissible. Please review the use cases described on our web site; and email us if you have any questions.

Print, Audiobook, and E-Reader Use During the Summer
Leaving North Carolina for all or most of the summer? Don’t forget to return library items before you leave town.
Why? If the book you borrowed is recalled for use by another patron, you’ll need to ship it back to Ford Library. If you aren’t able to ship it back, you should know that recall fines are $3/day.
If you are borrowing a Kindle, you do get a guaranteed 4 week loan, but they can’t be renewed after that. Audiobooks are just 2 week loans.
Thank you for returning library materials before you leave!
